As you can see we're not afraid of color when we're decorating-a-room. The small size of the-dining-room led us to many resources that taught us how-to-decorate a small room. The-dining-room wears a very bold and warm orange tone with accents in the blue family.
These blues are in the "cool color family" and do wonders for the room. The paint colors are a custom BEHR paint color. For years we have used only BEHR paints from our local Home Depot and they never disappoint.
DESIGN TIP: Take notice that the wall color in the-dining-room is exactly two shades lighter than the ceiling color. This was done to create more visual interest with the other two adjoining rooms in this section of the home, the living room, and the Ultimate Home Office (currently under improvement).
During our Design-IT phase of this project we learned of this technique for decorating-a-room that is smaller than most.
With the living room in the center, all three rooms will eventually share the same two colors. The living room has the opposite color scheme, two shades lighter on the ceiling and the darker color on the walls. It currently ties the two finished spaces together very well and will really pop once the office is completed.
Once the Ultimate Home Office is ready to be painted it will share the same color scheme as the-dining-room (reverse of the living room). This ties all three rooms together with a common color scheme and it creates a little different design twist in each space and great visual flow.
BEHR has a wonderful set of design tools to help you pull it all together if you're afraid of color. To get your creative juices flowing with great design ideas check out their "Dining In Style" piece, if that doesn't inspire you, nothing will!
There's even a new app for your IPhone or Android. The new ColorSmart by BEHR Mobile application, available as a free download for iPhone and Android devices, offers a range of unique features that allow consumers to act upon what inspires them at the moment when decorating-a-room.
Paint Color Cheat Sheets
Have you ever heard of the Paint Color Cheat Sheets? I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't, because up to this time this has been a secret only the pros in the color and design industry have been in on. It's a shortcut collection of best, proven, tried and tested paint colors that always work--the same ones that the pros use in their work every day when they're decorating-a-room.
As you can see this is not a large room, so when we renovated it we had the 12' x 12' room size to deal with. We wanted the room to look balanced, have great traffic flow, and have some storage options and we succeeded on all fronts.
This room will very comfortably seat four for dinner, has ample storage for table linens, china, and cutlery and great traffic flow.
After we determined our paint colors and finished the painting we moved on to the ceiling fixture. We found this cool company online that will make a completely customized drum pendant fixture based on your design choices. The pattern on this fixture is called Corona del Mar. We chose oil rubbed bronze hardware to match our outlet and switchplate covers.
This company has a host of world class designers such as Jeff Lewis Designs, Jill Magee, and Sarah Green just to name a few. They have fresh new designs for their lighting fixtures, wallpaper, pillows and much, much more. YOU design it and they make it happen.
Our storage solutions were an interesting journey. We are NOT huge fans of clunky furniture in a small space, so we researched and decided on four horizontal wall hung cabinets. These cabinets give us ample storage for everything we need in our dining room and fit the look and feel of the room we were designing.
Their high-gloss white finish enhances the look and feel of the plantation shutters perfectly. Our source for these great cabinets was CB2.
